Youth Ministry

Appropriate and fun spiritual education and fellowship for all ages!

Our Sunday School program meets during the 11 am church service. We have classes for children from birth through high school. Our Uniteens (for middle schoolers) and Y.O.U. (Youth of Unity, for high schoolers) attend retreats and rallies with young people from other Unity churches throughout the Southeast

fiveUnity’s Five Basic Principles for Children:

  1. God is all good and active in everything, everywhere.
  2. I am naturally good because God’s divinity is in me and in everyone.
  3. I create my experiences by what I choose to think and what I feel and believe.
  4. Through affirmative prayer and meditation, I connect with God and bring out the good in my life.
  5. I do and give my best by living the truth I know. I make a difference.

The Youth Ministry of Unity of Tallahassee provides a setting where spiritual ideas and activities are the focus. We trust that the children will learn spirituality by the way we live, rather than by memorizing a set of rules. We come to recognize certain basic ideas as Unity teachings, and we trust these basic concepts are gently reflected in all that we do.

roseCall out the Children…

By Myrtle Fillmore, co-founder of Unity
Our mission is not to entertain the children, but to call them out. To be always entertained is to be dwarfed and dependent. To be “called out” is to follow the harmonious law of the soul’s unfoldment. Who meddles with the rosebud? What fingers are deft enough to pry open that marvel of folded beauty? We are wise enough to leave it alone to follow the glad law of its own unfolding, but our children! Have we dealt as wisely with these buds of marvelous possibilities? Have we always remembered that they, too, must quicken and unfold through the innate law of their own genius?

A Closer Look at our Youth Groups:

Nursery (ages 0-3)

Our Nursery care is available during the 11:00 service, providing a safe and nurturing environment while parents and guardians attend service.

Unitots (Pre-K, ages 3-5)

Our Unitots program offers a transition from nursery care to full Sunday School. Lessons are creative and craft based, set around a theme incorporating biblical and spiritual ideas.

Our Uniteens program places a larger emphasis on spiritual principles and practices, and lessons begin to incorporate a greater degree of discussion, personal sharing, and critical thinking. We also focus on individuality, resisting peer pressure, and being respectful and kind to each other and parents.

Additionally, our Uniteens begin to have opportunities to go on regional and sub-regional retreats and lock-ins, where they can explore spiritual principles and make friends with other Uniteens from across the Southeastern United States. More information on the Southeastern Region Uniteen Program can be found here.

Youth of Unity – Y.O.U. (9-12, ages 14-18)  NOTE: This group is currently not meeting. Please check back later for more information.

The Youth of Unity program emphasizes youth leadership, with many of the Y.O.U.ers leading lesson plans and even helping to plan and run regional events. The Y.O.U. teachers are called “Sponsors” and they serve as mentors and support for the teens. Lessons are heavily discussion based, and often include time for a check-in or “heart talk” in which teens can freely and privately share any concerns they are facing in their lives.

Annual Events

Twice a year Uniteens are invited to go to Spring and Fall retreats. This provides an opportunity for them to grow spiritually and connect with other Uniteens from across the region.

YOU’ers also attend Spring and Fall rallies where they take on more responsibility and assume leadership roles throughout the weekend. There is also the YOU Summer Connection, which is a week-long event.
